This is a rare early Louis XVI canape sofa, it is hard to tell exactly when it was made, but it has been upholstered many times and was converted from original cushion to springs at an early date since the springs are themselves antique. The sofa has been completely restored, re-webbed, re-sprung & reupholstered by us in our professional upholstery workshops in Glasgow, Scotland as you can see in the photos. The frame is very heavy and well-constructed, with excellent carving which has been painted and part gilded, all is original and shows the signs of its age, though it is in good condition.
The sofa has been re-covered in a thick woven silk fabric from one of Venice’s oldest fabric companies which is not available to the general public. It features flowers in a watercolour pattern. Edges are finished with a matching woven trim from one of the best passementerie companies in Paris.
