This chair was designed for the theatre cabaret 'Fledermaus' (the ‘Bat’) in Vienna in 1907 by architect designer Josef Hoffmann.
It was designed by the Wiener Werkstätte, exclusive Viennese workshops, co-founded by Hoffmann in 1903. Inspired by the Guild of Handicraft, set up by the English architect and designer C.R. Ashbee in London, the workshops wanted to create good, simple design and new modern forms.
The manufacturer plate reads, 'Hoffmann made by Wittmann Austria'. Wittmann is a company whose traditional craftsmanship dates back over a century, to its origins as a leather and saddlery workshop.
The chair has been traditionally restored and re-covered in a fabric by Backhausen, Vienna; reproduced from an original Secessionist pattern in their archive.
